‘We’re a giant Swiss Army knife – the right tools for every job’

Deputy general secretary postal Terry Pullinger likened the CWU to the iconic multi-functional penknife as he gave his seal of approval to the “excellent” collective engagement framework (CEF) agreement recently achieved for Post Office members.

Speaking at a briefing of the union’s Post Office reps and branch secretaries in central London, Terry warmly praised CWU assistant secretary Andy Furey for his “intelligence, patience and determination” in securing the deal, which protects members’ representation rights going forward.

The deal was reached after lengthy negotiations brokered by arbitration service ACAS, which followed a shock announcement by the company last year slashing the number of full-time CWU reps from 19 down to just three.

“That was, effectively, a declaration of de-recognition,” said Terry today, adding that Andy had done “remarkably well” to change the minds of senior Post Office bosses over the course of the negotiations.

“This union is like a massive Swiss Army knife,” said the DGSP, explaining: “We’ve got the tools and the skills to adapt to any situation.”

Andy Furey said that he hoped this new agreement would herald the onset of an improved industrial relations environment within the Post Office and he also had some other good news for Crown Office members regarding their bonus incentive scheme.

“Each of our counter staff members will be receiving a £125 payout at the end of July on the basis of the results achieved during the April to June quarter,” he revealed, adding: “Well done to everyone – this is just reward for all of your hard work and dedicated service.”

Talks are still ongoing between the CWU and the company over the April 2018 annual pay negotiations, he confirmed.

“The feedback from our reps and branch secretaries today has been very positive and I am confident that our CEF agreement will be ratified – now let’s all focus on getting the best pay deal we can for our great members out there.”
