Ramadan Period Begins

Equalities

Muslims all over the world will have broken their first fast of the new Ramadan performing their first Ishtar (sunset breaking of fast) last night. This is a special period for Muslims and many CWU members will be entering the 30 day fasting period before Eid festival begins.

Ramadan, a month of religious reflection and fasting that takes place every year and many will be wondering about the intricacies of the period. It is important to be sensitive and respectful to fasting Muslims in this period. Interestingly, some non-Muslims also take up the fast as they wish to experience this and show solidarity to their Muslim friends.

To all our Muslim friends and CWU members who have entered the holy month of Ramadan we say “Ramadan Mubarak”.

The Chair of the CWU Race Advisory Committee Sajid Shaikh added “Ramadan is a very special time in the Muslim calendar. In 30 days time Muslims will be celebrating Eid and we are pleased to see that the vast majority, if not all Muslims requesting time off for this religious festival are sympathetically handled by their employers – it is important that you give your employer as much notice as possible when making a request for such leave.”
