Ian ‘Goals’ Murphy lays down London CWU football challenge

Regional secretary calls on the capital’s branches to enter teams in July charity tournament…

“We want to raise as much as we can for youth clubs and kids’ adventure playgrounds across London,” Ian Murphy tells CWU News, “and this competition will be a great way to do this, as well as a great day out for everyone.

“And it’ll also be an opportunity for each of our 22 branches to try their luck against the Mighty Harrow & District team – who start as clear bookies’ favourites,” he predicts, as he pulls on his bright yellow Watford FC shirt in preparation for the big day.

The tournament is open to every branch within the region and mixed teams are particularly welcome, with the contest to be held at the LPR Sports & Social Club in Harrow on Saturday 17th July.

“There’ll be food and refreshments available on the day, a raffle with some exciting prizes,” Ian continues, “and all proceeds will go to an extremely important cause.”

For several years, London Region has raised money to distribute funds to youth clubs and children’s adventure playgrounds to help fund the provision of meals to youngsters during school holidays.

“Usually, we have collections during Annual Conference Week and in particular at the ‘London Night’ social event,” the regional secretary explains. “But of course, there has been no Annual Conference for obvious reasons and so our regional committee thought of this event as an alternative.

“So come on all you footballing posties, engineers, financial services workers and others, contact your branch and get a team organised – depending on how many teams enter, we’ll probably run a ‘group stage’ then ‘knockout rounds’ and at the end of the day, we’ll see who’s going to be crowned CWU Champions of London!”
