CWU Joins Black History Month Celebrations

Black History Month in the UK highlights the history and contributions of Black communities and Black individuals, past and present. Black History Month has been a firm fixture on the equality calendar in the UK since October 1987 and the CWU are proud to celebrate it.

CWU General Secretary Dave Ward said “The CWU is proud to support Black History Month.  It is right that we promote knowledge of Black history, culture and heritage and that we celebrate the rich and positive contributions that members of our BAME communities have made to our society.

The CWU will again be supporting Wear Red Day organised by Show Racism the Red Card on Friday October 19^th and we encourage all our Branches to support this excellent initiative.”

RAC Chair Sajid Shaikh. “The CWU is proud to celebrate this vital part of the equality calendar. I hope Branches and Regions will be joining in and raising awareness in their workplaces of the significant achievements of BAME people from past and present.”

The Equality Department has a diverse collection of pull ups, including Mary Seacole, which are available to branches. The only cost is postage. We have also produced a booklet entitled Black Heroes of the Labour Movement which can be downloaded from the CWU website.
