Briefing for Branches with BTPFS Members

Issue No. 09/2018

TO ALL BRANCHES WITH BTPFS MEMBERS

Dear Colleague

BTPFS Internet of Things (IOT)

The CWU recently received a presentation from BT’s Head of Internet of Things (IOT) Transformation Manager regarding BT’s ability to harness the connectivity intelligence of IOT devices within BT buildings.

It was reported that from a commercial perspective the demand for IOT solutions is rapidly building with over 43% of large organisations already implementing IOT initiatives and BT see this as not only an opportunity of improving the efficiencies and comfort of the workplace but as a  potential offering to market.

They are therefore working with their technical colleagues and third party supplies to build capabilities and to fulfil the potential.

What does this project involve?

Through the deployment of sensors and other technology which will give insight to how buildings function and the way they are used.

The benefits are as follows:

  • Improve office comfort, optimise temperature, light levels, noise, humidity and CO2.
  • Improve health and safety e.g. legionnaires prevention, building parameter security, lone workers support, safety equipment monitoring.
  • Office space optimisation e.g. hot desk and meeting room finding.
  • Reduced energy costs and better environmental footprint.
  • Preventative maintenance of equipment such as lifts and boilers.

BT intend to trial IOT in some buildings

It is therefore BT’s intention to work with FSM and Operational Team colleagues to carry out trials and buildings for up to three months week commencing 28 May in a number of buildings in order to gather the data from the sensors to see what is happening.  Those buildings in the trial encompass a variety of building types so that BT can look into multiple use cases.

The current buildings that BT intend to trial the IOT sensors are as follows:

  • Adastral Orion
  • Alexander Bain House
  • Ambassador House/Paddington TE
  • Birmingham Bullring Lower Mall (EE Store)
  • Birmingham Bullring Upper Mall (EE Store)
  • Birmingham Corp. Street (EE Store)
  • Birmingham High Street (EE Store)
  • Bishopsgate TE
  • Bristol Capricorn
  • Bristol Parkgate
  • Derby Data Centre
  • Doxford EE Contact Centre
  • Enfield TSVC
  • Faraday
  • Hatfield B3
  • Hockley
  • Kemptown ATE
  • Merthyr EE Contact Centre
  • Milnthorpe ATE
  • Monument
  • Sevenoaks
  • Tinsley Data Centre

 BT has given assurances

  • A number of assurances have been given by BT that the sensors will not be collecting any data or be able to identify any individuals or their working patterns.
  • BT’s Data Privacy team have ensured that none of this data will be used or available to anyone outside this project.
  • A clear commitment has been given that this trial is not about monitoring people and that the trials are compliant with the new data protection regulations.
  • Further to this, that following the trial full consultation will take place with the CWU as a result of this trial and how the data will be used.

If there are any reps that have buildings included in the trial and want to know where the sensors or equipment are being fitted please contact the FSM in the first instance.

Any further questions or queries should be addressed to sabridge@cwu.org

Yours sincerely,
